Starting an online business can be very rewarding, not only, because of the potential for earning an income, but also, because of the self-satisfaction you feel when you have conquered a particular task or goal that you have set for yourself. They are service businesses, selling physical products, or selling information businesses.
After five years of searching, the only thing I have found that can’t be sold online is TIME. You may offer to save time for your clients/customers, but you cannot sell it.
Service businesses can be started based on skills or passion. If you have a particular skill, such as, typing, sewing, organizing or cleaning, you can set up a website that offers these services. You will find hundreds of freelance services such as freelance photography, freelance data entry, freelance newspaper, freelance graphics, freelance cad, freelance projects work at home, freelance writer, just Google the word freelance.
If you are a pet lover and want to earn an income taking care of vacationing families’ pets, set up a website of your own, then advertise this service in local online directories. There are sites that offer payment for taking surveys, participating on panels, clicking on banners, or just reading advertisements.
When you mention selling physical products online, the first thing that comes to mind is usually eBay or some other auction site. While this can be a lucrative business, it is very time consuming and can be a steep learning curve for those trying to reach a higher level of income. However, it can be a great place to start, while learning other means of creating your business.
If you have made so many of your “whatyamacallits” (your latest craft project such as crochet or woodworking) that your friends and family are begging you not to give them anymore, try listing them on eBay. You may also want to set up your own website for these products.
You can go to sites like Commission Junction or Linkshare and find merchants that sell the products you are interested in, and set up a site to sell these products for a commission. This eliminates the need for you to worry about inventory or shipping costs.
And then you have the information business. Everyone who visits the internet is looking for information, whether it’s a game to play, a guide to repairing something, a particular handbag, a book to read, the latest and greatest recipes, how to play tennis, golf, piano, guitar, the best deals on buying a new car, the latest electronic gadget, or the best way to train your pet, and the list goes on and on. These products are sold as eBooks, physical books, reports, how-to guides, CD’s, DVD’s, videos, podcasts, webinars and this list goes on and on, too.
When considering the information business, the first consideration should be the delivery of the product. Will it be a product that requires an inventory supply and shipment, such as CD’s, DVD’s, books, or a product that can be delivered electronically, such as reports, guides, eBooks, videos, etc.
With all that said, there isn’t any reason you can’t start your very own internet business. The very first thing you must do is TAKE ACTION. That action has to be, make a decision. You may have to brainstorm a few ideas of your own or just Google “make money on the internet” and study the results until you find something that you feel passionate about. Then, you must TAKE MORE ACTION. Study this new subject matter to discover the feasibility of starting a new business related to the subject. When you have decided that this is the business you want to start, you must “TAKE ACTION”, make a business plan, organize that plan, and then, you guessed it, TAKE ACTION.
